2018 Reading Challenge: The Mill Valley Public Library Joins PBS for The Great American Read!

May 22nd – October 23rd

The Mill Valley Public Library is one of 50 libraries nationwide and the only library in California to win a grant from ALA for PBS’s The Great American Read, a nationwide hunt to find America’s best-loved books.

Read from the 100 Best-Loved Books list, vote for your favorites on social media using #GreatReadPBS @millvalleylib, and join us for our awesome events.

Reading Challenge: Play The Great American Read Book Bingo! |Tues. 5/22 - Tues. 10/23

Read from PBS’s 100 Best-Loved books list and fill in your bingo sheet for a chance to win prizes including a literary-themed gift basket, merchandise from Out of Print, beautiful hardcover books, and more. Open to adults and teens. 

Sign up for the 2018 Great American Read Book Bingo. Pick up your sheet on 5/22. 



Series Premiere Screening and Kick-Off Party | Tues. 5/22 | 6:00pm

Attend our kick-off party and share tasty treats as you casually chat with others about the PBS Top-100 Books list before watching the premiere episode live. Attendees will receive a raffle ticket and a bingo sheet to start reading! (If you can't make it, you can print out your bingo sheet or pick one up from the reference desk.)

Longest Table Community Picnic | Sat. 8/11 | 1:00pm - Hauke Field

Save the date! We're hosting a community picnic for all participants. We'll gather together at Hauke Field to share food and conversation over the longest picnic table you've ever seen! Rotate around the themed-tables as you chat about books from the challenge.

Author Panel Discussion moderated by Michael Krasny | Fri. 9/7 | 7pm - Main Reading Room, Mill Valley Public Library

4-5 esteemed Bay Area authors and booksellers debate the merits of the 100 Books list; delving into their personal favorites and connections to books from the list, as well as books which were left out that they feel should have been included. KQED's Michael Krasny will moderate the panel. Adults and high school students. Registration recommended. Registration opens August 20th.

Series Finale Live Screening Party | Tues. 10/23 | 7pm

We'll celebrate the end of our reading challenge and the PBS series with food, a final raffle, top-10 ballot predictions, and a live broadcast of the series finale as PBS counts down the top 10 books to reveal America's #1 best loved novel. Registration recommended. Registration opens TBA.
