The City of Mill Valley Department of Public works is working closely with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) on an upcoming pipeline replacement project in the Downtown area of Mill Valley.

The purpose of this project is to enhance gas service to PG&E customers by replacing the gas lines with modern piping that is more resistant to corrosion and earth movement. The replacement pipes will create a safer and more reliable natural gas system.

Construction is planned to begin around March 17, pending weather restrictions, and will continue through July 2014.

In the next few weeks, community members will see PG&E trucks in the Downtown area preparing and setting up for construction and possibly beginning excavation.

The work will first start on Gardner Street and then move down to Throckmorton. Construction work will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but customers may see PG&E trucks in the area after 5:00 p.m. The reason being that even though construction is complete by 5 p.m., often times we remain in the area to work with customers, relight pilot lights, etc.

PG&E and City staff are making every effort to mitigate traffic impacts during construction in the downtown area and are working with the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce to notify local businesses and residents of the planned work. The City is also working closely with PG&E to ensure that the construction work will not affect emergency vehicle access or response times.

The City and PG&E will provide regular updates to the community regarding the project. Please visit the Downtown Pipeline Replacement Project page for news, information, and contact information.
