GROUNDSWORKER

SALARY: 3,852 – 4,916/Month

The City of Mill Valley is seeking a self-directed problem-solver with high standards for quality and solid commitments to public service to fill the open position of Groundsworker.

 

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, to perform skilled tasks in gardening and general grounds maintenance work; to prune and trim trees and shrubs; and to do related work as required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to perform skilled tasks in gardening and general grounds maintenance work; to prune and trim trees and shrubs; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION

Receives direction from the Park Supervisor

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Plants, transplants, fertilizes, cultivates, waters and sprays flowers, landscaping trees and turf areas.

Spades, rakes, hoes and otherwise prepares ground for planting; starts plants from seed.

Plans and lays out flower gardens and borders.

Mows, weeds, trim and renovates lawn areas.

Trims, cuts and prunes shrubs and trees with hand saws and other basic pruning tools.

Performs general grounds maintenance of raking, sweeping, garbage pick-up.

Maintains, contracts and repairs park structures.

Performs repair and maintenance work in keeping equipment, tools and hoses in proper condition.

In the absence of the Parks Supervisor, may plan and direct the activities of the grounds crew.

OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES

Operates other specialized equipment in the parks division.

Teaches other personnel in the proper operation of the equipment.

Contributes to the effectiveness and safety of City operations.

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

JOB-RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of the effects of sun, water, soil, fertilizers, and of the pests and diseases upon the growth of turf, flowers, plants, shrubs and trees.

Comprehensive knowledge of landscaping techniques.

Ability to:

Understand and follow written and oral directions.

Maintain and repair garden tools and equipment.

Prune, trim and shape trees and shrubs.

Make repairs to plumbing and irrigation systems.

Perform carpentry, cement, painting and masonry work.

Identify grasses, flowers and shrubs.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Education and experience comprised of completion of the twelfth grade and three years of practical experience in general grounds maintenance or garden work involving growing and caring for lawn areas, flowers, ornamental shrubs and trees.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of California.

May be required to obtain a Class II California Driver's License within six months following employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Individuals shall be capable of listing a minimum of 50 lbs.

Position is subject to physical and drug test.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an outdoor setting in both developed and undeveloped areas of the city. Work may be accessed through difficult terrain. Work requires frequent bending, lifting, stooping, pushing and pulling motions for a variety of tasks. Work may involve repetitive motions.
