The City of Mill Valley mourns the passing of Joan Boessenecker, former Mayor of Mill Valley. She was 86. Mrs. Boessenecker moved to Mill Valley in 1954 and was elected to the City Council in 1978. She served two terms on the Mill Valley City Council and was one of the Council's first female members and the third female Mayor of Mill Valley.
Some of Mrs. Boessenecker’s achievements include the consolidation of the Mill Valley and Tamalpais fire services, and initiating paramedic service in Southern Marin and serving on the 1989 General Plan Steering Committee. In addition to her interest in public safety, Mrs. Boessenecker’s concern for the environment and leadership brought about the acquisition of 190 acres of open space as well as protecting Mill Valley’s ridgelines from over-development.
A memorial is planned for 11:00 am December 22 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 3 Oakdale Avenue in Mill Valley. The January 7 City Council meeting will include an item on her passing and will be adjourned in her memory.
