Bicycle Officer Program
Posted Date: 10/4/2012

Bike Patrol Officer Ian MaddisonThe Mill Valley Police Department has recently resurrected the bicycle officer program, on a limited basis, to patrol the downtown area, parks, and in places that patrol cars cannot access. The program was initiated 23 years ago but was phased out due to the lack of funding.

The newly appointed bicycle officer has received an extensive three-day training course in basic bike training, patrol operations, special event patrols, and directed patrols.  To date, the bicycle officer has been deployed during the day shift hours, approximately once or twice per week, depending on staffing levels. He has written a few traffic citations and spends time patrolling and doing community relations while on patrol.

The program has, so far, incurred minimal costs. Police Chief J. Angel Bernal estimates that the Department can operate the bicycle officer program for roughly $1,000 per year. This estimate does not include overtime, as the bicycle officer is not deployed if it requires overtime.
