SmartGarden

SmartGarden

In July 2014, the Library was awarded $40,000 from the California State Library “Pitch an Idea” grant to create what we are calling SmartGarden – a demonstration garden that teaches the importance of native plants and the necessity of water management.

Mill Valley residents live in a beautiful natural landscape surrounded by the Muir Woods redwood groves and Mount Tamalpais. In the face of environmental stressors including, drought, flooding in low lying areas, water pollution from stormwater runoff, and degraded habitat, many see the need to preserve and regenerate the landscape. Education on sustainable gardening and water conservation and management is critical for the preservation of this unique environment.

The SmartGarden is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library
Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act,
administered in California by the State Librarian.
