The Community

Mill Valley is a full service general law city. Incorporated in 1900, it operates under a Council-Manager form of government. Five City Council members are elected at large.

Mill Valley, a suburban community located ten miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, is one of eleven cities in Marin County. Its population is approximately 14,000 covering a five square mile area. It has a larger service population covering several unincorporated communities. Well known for its art and film festivals as well as its mountain biking and hiking trails, Mill Valley’s location at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais makes it a desirable place to live, work and play.

Located minutes away from Stinson Beach and Muir Woods, Mill Valley has an active and charming downtown. Quiet tree-lined neighborhoods lie just outside the downtown area. Housing, which ranges from quaint cottages to sizable executive homes, is quite expensive. The city is serviced by exceptional school districts and it is well served by numerous civic and non-profit service groups and organizations. Mill Valley has a remarkable park system that is unusual for a city of its size. The City Library is nestled among the redwoods in an award-winning building and reflects the diverse intellectual and recreational interests of the community. The Community Center offers a wide spectrum of classes and events and is home to an aquatics center, gym, meeting rooms, event spaces, a community garden and several large playing fields.

Mill Valley is a close-knit community with a well-educated population. Residents are actively involved in important local decisions about quality of life issues and the future direction of their city. The City Council encourages a high level of interaction between its citizenry and city government so that important issues are debated and discussed.
