Mill Valley Fire and Police Department Public Safety message:
Pull to the Right for Lights and Sirens. In an emergency situation help should arrive as quickly as possible. Everyone can do their part by pulling to the right for lights and sirens! Many people panic or simply do not know or adhere to the rules of the road when emergency vehicles are approaching.
California Vehicle Code Section 21806--Authorized Emergency Vehicles states upon the immediate approach of an emergency vehicle which is sounding a siren:
- Drivers shall yield the right-of-way and immediately drive to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway, clear intersection, stop and remain stopped until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.
- A person driving a vehicle in an exclusive or preferential use lane shall exit that lane immediately upon determining that the exit can be accomplished with reasonable safety.
- This also applies to all pedestrians in the roadway to proceed to the nearest curb or place of safety and remain there until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.
Failure to do so can cause serious accidents, delays to first responders and an expensive citation.
