Sofia Coppola - Lost in Translation (2003)
Two Americans, “lost” in Tokyo find companionship; a film actor past his prime (Bill Murray) and the bored wife of a visiting photographer (Scarlett Johansson). They form a friendship, bonding through their misadventures during one week in Tokyo, experiencing the differences between Japanese and American cultures and also between their respective generations. Not a conventional love story, their romance is based on emotional longing rather than physical desire. “That's the way I work,” Coppola said; “I try to imagine what I would like to see.” For Lost in Translation, Coppola won the Oscar for Best Screenplay Writing. She was also nominated for Best Director and as Producer for Best Picture. Bill Murray was nominated for Best Actor. Coppola was the first American woman nominated for Best Director Oscar and at age 32 the youngest nominee ever.
Doors open at 7:00. This series is sponsored by The Friends of the Mill Valley Library. For more Programs and Events at the Library, see the Library Events Calendar.
