The Friends of the Mill Valley Library present a series of Monday Night at the Movies events. In January the Friends will present two films about how people adapt to growing old - very differently.  In The World's Fastest Indian (showing January 6th) it's determination - to set a new motorcycle speed record by an ailing 68 year old.  On Golden Pond  is a story of reconciliation and acceptance in the face of aging and physical frailty.

On Golden Pond (1981)

Monday, January 6th @ 7:30 p.m.

Henry Fonda plays the brusque, cantankerous Norman Thayer, a one-time college professor approaching his 80th birthday with a mixture of anger, cynicism and fear as he shows signs of losing his facilities.  Katherine Hepburn is his wife, Ethel, a loving, pragmatic anchor devoted to Norman.  Their only child, Chelsea (Jane Fonda), has long estranged herself from her family, unable to come to terms with her unhappy, unhealthy relationship with her father. She shows up with a fiance (Dabny Coleman) before they go off to Europe together, leaving his son (Doug McKeon) with Norman and Ethel.  Gradually communication and trust lead to understanding and reconciliation among the family.

On Golden Pond was nominated for a remarkable 10 Oscars.  Both Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn won Oscars and Jane Fonda was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.  Roger Ebert said of the film, "On Golden Pond is a treasure for many reasons, but the best one, I think, is that I could believe it ... there were moments when the movie was witness to human growth and change.  I left the theater feeling good and warm, and with a certain resolve to try and mend my own relationships and learn to start listening better."

Doors open at 7:00. This series is sponsored by The Friends of the Mill Valley Library. For more Programs and Events at the Library, see the Library Events Calendar.
