Picturing Rural California | February 25th, 7:00pm During 2011, local writer and photographer Lisa M. Hamilton drove nearly ten thousands miles around California, gathering stories and photographing in places most people have never heard of: Surprise Valley, Lost Hills, Mecca. "I think the state’s urban majority believes they already know rural California--what it looks like, who lives there, how they think. To put it simply, my intention was to prove them wrong, to show them that rural California is far more diverse and dynamic than any of us from the outside assume."
The result of her travels is "Real Rural," a multimedia portrait of rural California. Currently the work is the subject of a show at the California Historical Society, for which Hamilton paired her contemporary images with vintage photographs from the Society's collection dating back to the 19th century. In this library art lecture, Hamilton will explain how the work evolved, and discuss the art of storytelling through photographs. |
