What is available through ILL?
Books, microfilm, and photocopies of non-circulating materials (such as periodical articles, genealogical materials, etc) may be requested through ILL.
What is not available?
Generally, DVDs are not available.
Who is eligible to request ILL?
Anyone who has a Mill Valley library card and whose residential address is in the 94941 zip code may initiate an ILL request.
What is the procedure for ILL?
First check the MARINet catalog to see if the item is owned in Marin. If not, check Supersearch to determine if the item is owned in the North Bay. You can use your Marinet library card in SuperSearch and have items sent directly to Mill Valley Library. If you can't find the item in either the Marinet catalog or in SuperSearch, you can check all the libraries in California by using FirstSearch. If you locate the item using FirstSearch let us know and we'll process your request.
In order to initiate an ILL, you must contact the Reference Desk at Mill Valley Public Library and fill out the book request form or the journal article request form. A complete and accurate request can be expedited. Please include as much of the bibliographic information as possible, including:
Author, title of work, specific edition if that is important to you, place and date of publication, and name of publisher.
For journal article requests, include volume number, issue number, date, page numbers required, as well as the title of the journal, title of the article, and author of the article.
We will email or phone you when your item arrives. It will be held for you until the due date at the Circulation Desk. ILL materials must be returned to the Circulation Desk, not the book drop or any other library.
What fees and fines are associated with ILL?
Most ILL transactions do not result in any additional costs, there are, however, occasional costs imposed by some lenders which will passed on to you. You will be asked to approve these fees before we proceed, but please indicate how much you are willing to pay on the request form.
Late fees are $.20 per day per item. Late returns may jeopardize our future borrowing privileges at the lending library.
Lost books are assessed at $50 to $100, regardless of the original value of the book. Damaged books will be assessed individually, and if severely damaged, may also be charged at $50 to $100.
What is the loan period?
Photocopies are generally yours to keep. Book loan periods are determined by the lending library, which can range from 2-4 weeks. Materials obtained through ILL are often not renewable.

Can I request Rush Service?
You can specify a Rush on the request, but there is no guarantee the lender will expedite it. While most items arrive within two weeks, it is not unusual to take up to 6 weeks. The time required for materials to arrive depends upon the difficulty of the request, the shipping time, how fast the lending library processes such requests, etc.
What if you cannot fulfill my request?
We will notify you if we cannot obtain the item you requested. There is no guarantee that material requested will be located. There is no guarantee that potential libraries will lend materials to us. This is especially true for rare titles, academic theses, genealogical materials, and other items considered irreplaceable.
