| The Mill Valley Library are pleaed to offer two monthly book clubs! Sign up at any time! |
|
The American Experience Book Club (fiction)- Every 2nd Wed. of each month at 7pm The American experience operates under the idea that there is no single American experience, as notions of what it means to be "American" have changed over time, and as the intersections of place, gender, race, and class inform these experiences. Join us as we explore classics and undiscovered literary gems that speak to the issues of the constantly changing face of American Identity.
Proposed reading (subject to change)
August: The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle
Sept: The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts by Maxine Hong Kingston
Oct: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
World Literature Book Club (fiction)- Every 4th Tues. of each month at 7pm
"End of Summer Mixer" (8/28, 6:00-7:00pm) -- Coffee, Tea, Treats & Bonus Book Exchange outside in the Peter Dreyfuss Garden from 6-7pm. Bring any book that you’ve enjoyed to exchange for a different one with the group. The club will meet at the regular time (7-9pm) after the social hour.
The global economy has erased arbitrary boundaries between cultures. On a daily basis, we interact with the world in both large and small ways. We call phone banks in India, e-mail on-line businesses in England, drink fair-trade coffee from Columbia, read about micro-lending in Africa, and shop for green toys made in Thailand. But what about literature? Does the country define the writer or does the writer define the country? Or can literature take place in a global vacuum, devoid of setting? Join us as we dip in the literary waters of many cultures and sample some of the best of the best, one book at a time.
Proposed reading (subject to change):
August: The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima
September: Special guest Haleh Hatami, a multilingual world traveler with an expertise in Iranian literature, will discuss Censoring an Iranian Love Story by Shahriar Mandanipour
October: Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter by Mario Vargas Llosa
