Special Needs Evacuation Individuals are those persons requiring evacuation assistance during a disaster event.
The emphasis of the program is for non-ambulatory individuals, meaning people who cannot walk under their own power.
Homebound patients on advanced technical equipment must have a caregiver who will make plans for them. Arrangements should also be made with family or friends who are able to provide the particular care you need. Individuals meeting the SNE program criteria can be provided shelter and/or transportation assistance within the available resources of the City of Mill Valley.
The City of Mill Valley Special Needs Evacuation Program is a voluntary and confidential program that should be considered by individuals who, in a disaster event, have no alternative other than a public shelter or who might need transportation to a shelter. The City of Mill Valley recommends using this program only as a last resort and individuals with special evacuation needs should consider sheltering with relatives or friends in preference to the use of this program.
The special needs evacuation program is for those individuals who are not in a care facility (such as a hospital, nursing home or congregate living facility) and who must be able to perform their own activities of daily living. When it appears likely that our area will be impacted by an emergency event, program participants requiring assistance will receive a call updating them on the situation, advising them what actions should be taken, approximate time when transportation will arrive, and what shelter the individual will be taken to.
Individuals must be ready to go when the transportation arrives. It is imperative to stay on schedule. Special needs evacuation transportation is not a taxi service.
If you refuse transportation when it arrives, you may not have another opportunity to leave. This may put you at greater risk.
